Project Overview
Cities across Nepal are rapidly urbanizing creating the need for a sustainable urban mobility plan (SUMP). Birendranagar Municipality is one of them, and through this project, a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) was designed and developed to transform the city’s transport landscape from disorganized, motorized growth into a safe, accessible, and people-centred system. By focusing on non-motorized transport and improved public transit, the initiative addresses the current gaps in bus services and unregulated auto-rickshaw operations.
The plan was built through a data-driven, participatory approach. It integrated extensive field research, including origin-destination surveys and household data, with direct input from residents across all 14 wards. By prioritizing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and cycling networks, the project provides a strategic roadmap for the municipality to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and ensure equitable mobility for all citizens. The developed plan was handed over to the Birendrangar Municipality for effective implementation and integration in the annual development plans.
