Bike to School for Clean Air

Project Overview

The “Bike to School for Clean Air” project was an educational initiative designed to address the growing air pollution crisis in Kathmandu Valley by engaging school students as changemakers. The project aimed to mitigate air pollution by promoting bicycles as a sustainable transportation alternative while raising awareness of environmental issues among youth. Recognizing that 14% of Nepal’s air pollution originates from the transportation sector, the program focused on equipping students with both knowledge about air quality and practical skills for bicycle commuting.

Implemented by Cycle City Network Nepal in collaboration with Lions Club of Kathmandu Cycle City, the project conducted educational workshops and practical training sessions across five schools in Kathmandu Valley (four public and one private). The program targeted middle school students who were old enough to commute independently, providing them with deeper knowledge about clean air issues that were insufficiently covered in the national curriculum. Through interactive sessions and storytelling, the project combined theoretical learning about pollution sources, health impacts, and mitigation strategies with practical bicycle safety training. Through these activities, students were empowered to become advocates for clean air in their communities.
